Serving the special needs of members, families and community agencies

YMCA Adapted Physical Education (A.P.E.) staff members are dedicated to meeting the special needs of those persons with mental or physical disabilities. We offer opportunities for individuals, families or agencies to participate in programs, membership, facility rentals or collaborations. Financial assistance is available. Please inquire at the front desk.

The YMCA Facility Accessibility

  • Entry ramp with automatic doors
  • Universal weight lifting stations
  • Hoyer Lift in large pool
  • Accessible locker rooms, rest rooms, and changing rooms
  • Elevator access to all programs

Aides are welcome to attend and participate in all programs with their client at no additional charge with the exception of bowling.

Open Swim

Swimming is offered during any scheduled family swim or at days/times listed below. Lifeguards are provided. Hoyer Lift is available, but please call in advance if lift is needed. Tuesday & Thursday, 10:30 - 11:30a.m.

Individual Exercise

This is an open recreation opportunity. Individual exercise is a membership privilege or is available to non-members on the days/times listed below. This is an opportunity to use the walking track, stationary bikes, universal weights, or exercise area.

Tuesday & Thursday, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, 7:15 - 8:00 p.m.

Saturday Strikers Bowling League

Bowling is offered at AMF Laketown Lanes at Stanton and Stevenson Drive. Ramps and guides are provided. Participants may bowl two games at no charge. The YMCA offers transportation through the SMTD Access Bus Program. The rental for this chartered transportation is funded by the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and local labor unions. FREE for Members

S.N.A.P. (Special Needs Aquatic Program)

S.N.A.P. is a specialized swim lesson program targeting individuals with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other special needs. Participation must be approved by the Aquatic Director. Sessions will run in conjunction with the YMCA program calendar. Thanks to funds made available through the L.L.D.S.S., fees are minimal to participate.
