- Walk Across America:
The plan for Walk Across America is to help keep children fit and healthy. We will start our journey in New York City and then make our way across America with pit stops in places such as Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. At these different pit stops, we will have “parties” to help celebrate reaching the destination. Every day the children will walk a certain amount of laps that will then be broken down into miles, and we will use sticker feet to map their way to each different pit stop.

- Reading Program through United Way:
For the second year in a row, Chatham Elementary will be doing a reading program that is funded by United Way. The before and after school program has been given books at different reading levels. The children spend 15 minutes every day reading from their specific reading level. The staff then maps their progress and includes the children’s school teacher on the progress. Last year the staff was able to watch the increase in many of the children’s reading levels.

In the library we will be using the books to help the children increase their reading levels. We plan on going to the library 2-3 times a week for roughly 15 minutes each visit. The children will read books at their reading level, and then begin to challenge themselves at a reading level higher than their own. This activity will begin once all the students have been tested for their reading levels in their classrooms. The computer lab will be used as support for the children to increase their reading level. We will use the lab once a week, and here the children can take tests over the books they have read to help with their comprehension skills.
