Youth Programs
Y activities encourage healthy spirits, minds and bodies. Keep your kids physically active this year with these fun programs!
Y Aquatics
Parent-Child Classes: The only thing more fun than watching these classes is to join in! Our cute little water babies, ages 6-36 months learn basic swim techniques while securely swimming with mom or dad. This is a great way to spend bonding time and our songs and games make it fun for your youngster! Classes are held in the small, heated pool.
Child-Only Classes: Kids learn more than just swimming from the Y’s aquatics program! They develop social skills, self-confidence and a strong sense of personal and water safety. Classes are based on skill levels. Kids are promoted as they demonstrate skill development.
Swim Parties:
Everybody loves a swim party and there’s no better place to have one than your Springfield Y! Children swim for an hour under the watchful eye of one of our trained lifeguards, then move on to our party room for traditional festivities.
SPY Swim Team: The Y offers a year-long program for youth ages 5-21 who can swim at least one pool length of front and back crawl. New swimmers are welcome to join at any time! The head coach determines practice times and skills levels for each swimmer.
Y Gymnastics
Parent-Child Classes: These fun classes are for toddlers and preschoolers ages 1-5 years. Creative classes keep your little ones moving and are designed to be fun while enhancing large motor skills. In addition to gymnastics-focused parent-child activities, the Y also offers Messy Munchkins which allows children to explore a variety of artistic media such as paints, markers, play dough and more!
Child-Only Classes: A progressive series of child-only gymnastics classes is offered starting at age 4. Gymnastics is a great way to learn balance, coordination, flexibility and strength. Children advance through the classes based on skill evaluations and coordinator approval. If you are signing your child up for gymnastics for the first time, we strongly encourage you to contact our Gymnastics Coordinator so that an individualized assessment of your child’s skill level can be conducted.
Gymnastics Team: The Y’s Gymnastics team is open to girls aged 6 and older. The team competes in both YMCA and USAG competitions from October to May each year for levels 4-9. New gymnasts are always welcome. For private tryouts, contact the head coach. YMCA membership is required.
Y Arts
Expand your artistic side and celebrate the artist, musician and dancer that lurks inside all or us. See our program catalog for our expanding program.
Special Interest Programs for Kids
New classes are added to the YMCA’s program all the time, but here is a sampling of our most popular selections.
Child Ballet & Tap: Forty-five minute classes teach the basics of ballet. Stretching, dance positions, bar work and basic steps are taught in fun and imaginative ways.
Tae Kwon Do: Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art with techniques that blend several ancient self-defense systems into a single dynamic one. Extensive kicking and footwork patterns characterize the sport. Our program stresses self-esteem, self-discipline, physical fitness, balance, flexibility and concentration. Open to children aged 4-12 years.
Goju Karate: Karate classes build coordination, self-confidence, discipline and respect for self and others. The program incorporates blocks, punches, kicks, throws and other techniques. This is the oldest continuously running karate program in Springfield and the only Springfield karate program affiliated with the Bill “Superfoot” Wallace system. Open to children 5-12 years.
Y After School
"The philosophy of the YMCA's Child Care programs is to nurture each child
through care, understanding, love and affection. We offer school age child care programs that promote learning through play and recreation. We believe that all children should have the opportunity to develop their individual abilities at their own pace and in the spirit of self-worthiness."
Before and after-school care is available for elementary-aged children at schools in Rochester, Riverton and Chatham. Activities include homework assistance, crafts and group games. Special family events are held periodically. Care is also provided on school holidays and early dismissal days.
