Pickleball is a newer sport that takes elements from badminton, tennis and wiffleball. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is similar to a tennis net, but is mounted two inches lower. The game is played with a hard paddle and a polymer smaller version of a wiffleball.
Pickleball is similar to tennis, but with differences. A pickleball ball typically moves at one-third of the average speed of a tennis ball and the court is just under one-third of the total area of a tennis court.
Originally invented as a backyard pastime, pickleball is now an organized sport represented by national and international governing bodies. The United States Pickleball Association estimates there are more than 100,000 active pickleball players in the country and we have a program at the Springfield YMCA. We kick off pickleball in the colder months when folks are unable to play outside.
The Springfield YMCA is working with PickleballCentral.com and have signed up for their ClubRewards program. ClubRewards gives members of local pickleball clubs a 5% discount on everything they purchase from PickleballCentral.com and an additional 5% of the purchase price goes back to the YMCA in the form of an annual gift card. When checking out, simply type in our club’s discount code CRSpringfieldYmca and hit apply!
