Beam Signing Marks Next Stage in the Construction of the New Downtown YMCA

Last week the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and employees of the YMCA of Springfield left their mark as they celebrated a meaningful milestone in the construction of the new Downtown YMCA.  They signed a steel beam that was lifted into place at the entrance to the new building.  Most signed their names or a family member’s name while others wrote a special note of support. All those who participated followed COVID-19 safety guidelines by wearing a face covering and practicing social distancing.

The beam was erected the afternoon of May 12, 2020. The placement of the beam represents the completion of the structural phase of the project. Video of this event can be found on the Y’s social media channels and website.  O’Shea Builders reports they are finishing the roof and putting in windows. As they finish up with the last bits of work on the outside of the building, attention will shift to the inside.

The targeted completion date of the project is this fall.  The new facility is in the Enos Park neighborhood and will bring better health and a greater sense of community to the city of Springfield.  This community resource and gathering place will feature several amenities including an aquatic center with an eight-lane pool and a recreational pool for swim instruction, lap swimming, water exercise, special needs aquatics, and family fun.  The state-of-the-art fitness and weight area, racquetball courts, indoor track and a full-court gymnasium will help address the health needs of our community. The high-tech gymnastics center will provide gymnastics for both recreational and competitive groups. The facility will also house youth enrichment areas to assure every child has access to safe spaces and positive adult role models.
